Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce must make a move for free-agent Nedum Onuoha to solve the club’s defensive crisis, with just two recognised centre-backs currently fit and available.
What’s the situation?
Villa have had a mixed start to the season and are currently sitting in 12th place in the Championship after two wins, three draws and a loss in their first six games of the campaign. However, things could have been much worse for the Birmingham-based club as earlier in the summer they faced a winding up order from HMRC over unpaid taxes and looked as though they would have to sell their main stars in order to meet Financial Fair Play regulations following their failure to gain promotion to the Premier League.
Thankfully for the fans, billionaires Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens came in, bought a controlling stake in the club and began to pump money back in where it was needed.
Bruce was then able to make seven signings in total, but he failed to address the problem of a lack of centre-backs towards the end of the window and even allowed Tommy Elphick to leave on loan for Hull.
Options available
There are clearly no shortage of options for Villa, with a number of centre-backs available on free transfers and the club have been linked with both John Terry, who spent last season at Villa Park, and Robert Huth.

Both of these players though are very much coming to the end of their careers and a better option would be former Queens Park Rangers captain Onuoha, who left the West London club this summer after six years.
The now 31-year-old came through the ranks at Manchester City and played 115 games for the club, winning a Premier League title in 2012. The powerful defender could make a solid partner alongside James Chester, as Manchester United loanee Axel Tuanzebe continues to be used at right-back by Bruce.
