For all of the money invested at Manchester United since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, it is striking just how many defensive players frequently used by Jose Mourinho were at the club under the Scot.

Mourinho has tried to build a new central defensive duo but Eric Bailly has struggled with injury while Victor Lindelof has had problems adapting to the intensity of English football.

There is a certain weight to the argument that a more sturdy defence would allow Mourinho to play a more expansive, high-tempo game with United and to that end, a defensive overhaul is needed at the club.

One man who has been linked with Old Trafford is Toby Alderweireld, the Tottenham and Belgium defender who has far more experience than Bailly or Lindelof.
